Develop skills

Moving on Up is our exciting new singing project for children, supported by Sing Up!

Primary school choirs in and around Milton Keynes have been creating their own, unique musical theatre pieces with the help of talented teenage singers who took part in the last Choir of the Year competition. All the choirs came together to perform at our showcase day “Songs from the Shows, Shows from the Songs” at the MK Dons Stadium on 27 February.

The inspiration for Moving on Up was the astounding quality of youth choirs which entered Choir of the Year 2008. We wanted find a way to share their talent with younger children. Groups of ‘Young Leaders’ from three youth choirs - The Voice Squad, Cantate and Masquerade – together with their musical directors have been working with nine primary schools in Buckinghamshire since September 2009 to help them develop their singing and performance skills. Under the expert guidance of Artistic Director and Composer Barry Russell, the choirs were set the challenge to get creative with well known songs, for example taking a song from a musical and incorporating a related pop song.

The children's choirs were also wowed by performances given by the three youth choirs at the end of the show.

Participating youth choirs are:
Cantate, led by Nick Shaw
Masquerade, led by Barry Clark
Voice Squad Seniors, led by Birgitta Kenyon

Participating Primary Schools are:

Brookmead School
Christ The Sower Ecumenical Primary School
Green Park School
Hanslope Primary School
Middleton Primary School
Quainton Church of England Combined School
St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Primary School
Stanton School
Willen Primary School

What you told us

“I found it a really enjoyable and fun experience which I felt very privileged to be a part of. Once the children began to relax and join in they were so enthusiastic and it was really heart-warming to see such enthusiasm coming from the next generation of singers. Personally, it was one of the best things I’ve done - passing on my experience, knowledge and love of singing on to children who will hopefully grow up to have the same love of it as The Voice Squad do!”
Katherine Green, Young Leader, The Voice Squad

“The sound of everyone singing was breathtaking and I don’t think I’ll EVER forget that moment in my life!
Katie, Year 6, Brookmead School
