Choir of the Year Workshop

Develop skills

Moving on Up is our exciting new singing project for children, supported by Sing Up!

Primary school choirs in and around Milton Keynes are creating their own, unique musical theatre pieces with the help of talented teenage singers who took part in Choir of the Year 2008.

We were bowled over by the amazing quality of singing in the youth choirs that entered Choir of the Year in 2008 and wanted find a way of sharing their talent with younger children.

Guided by animateur and composer Barry Russell, members of three youth choirs along with their conductors will help the children's choirs to develop their singing and performance skills.

The first part of the project, "Songs from the Shows - Shows from the Songs" encourages the choirs to be creative with existing material; the challenge is to take a song from a musical such as Singing in the Rain and incorporate a related song, for example Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head. The choirs will then develop the song material, incorporating movement, for a showcase performance at Milton Keynes Dons stadium on 27th February 2010. The children's choirs will also have the chance to be wowed by performances given by the three youth choirs at this exciting event.

Over the course of the project a small group of 'Young Leaders' from the youth choirs will take part in workshops and school visits with the primary schools, developing their skills and confidence in leading.

Participating youth choirs are:
Cantate, led by Nick Shaw
Masquerade, led by Barry Clark
Voice Squad Seniors, led by Birgitta Kenyon

Participating Primary Schools are:

Brookmead School
Christ The Sower Ecumenical Primary School
Green Park School
Hanslope Primary School
Middleton Primary School
Quainton Church of England Combined School
St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Primary School
